WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| Snow cover reduced to 50% on 1 June and completely melted on 14 June. A 50% snow cover for 1 June is highly unusual for this site. The average temperature over the breeding season was 3øC higher in 2001 versus 2002. As in most years, there was a serious storm with cold rain and high wind from 23-25 June. Reproductive success of birds was lower than in 2000, but this was more likely related to a lower abundance of lemmings as opposed to an effect of the harsh weather.

BIOTIC
CONDITIONS
| Rodents abundance evaluation: |
low
Breeding conditions:
| This was a very early year with low lemming abundance. Sightings of arctic fox and jaegers were more frequent this year than in 2000. Reproductive success was low for all species that we monitored, presumably due to increased pressure from predators. Densities of some shorebirds were lower in 2001 versus 2000. Mayfield estimate of hatch success in shorebirds was 0.56, and hatching success in Sabine's Gulls was 52%.
Rodent dynamics:
| Lemmings were more abundant in this year than in 2000. No capture data.
Rodent species recorded:
| Latin | Abundance |
| Lemmus trimucronatus | rare |
| Dicrostonyx groenlandicus | rare |

Summary
of fauna studies: |
| In 2001 we conducted detailed studies of Herring Gulls, Sabine's Gulls and shorebirds. All parameters of basic breeding ecology were recorded, such as nest success, nesting densities, timing of peak lay and hatch, etc.
